Being Jewish, I want a man in office who gets how serious it is with Israel and Iran, that is McCain!!! (9/27/08) Dave's response: If talking to Iran can prevent a war, including an attack against our ally Israel, then I agree with Obama. Let's give it a shot..... Now that is hypocritically uproariously funny. Maybe the PC speech crowd should take the advice of their chief spokesbitch. If you don't like what someone says, STFU if you can't take a joke and give us back our money for those gov't progams that restrict our civil liberties. Funny how the media doesn't cover that outburst. Imagine if Doug Tracht had told a joke and shut down a heckler's response. Oh wait, he did that didn't he,,and it cost him a career. It should like wise cost Babs her audience, but Al never protested. Pathetic bitch. (9/27/08) McCain vs Letterman. I don't think Dave's rant shows his lefty leaning, it shows that he saw through what McCain was doing. It's obvious the Senator was trying to make himself the hero by rushing to Washington to save the country. Funny thing is that he didn't actually fly back until Thursday morning. He must have thought it was a really big problem to rush there the next day, guess there are no flights to Washington on Wednesday evenings. (9/27/08) The mailbag poster who referenced Streisand's famous heckling incident will be pleased to know that Miss Babs' calm and measured response has been immortalized in song. The two-minute and thirty-five second ditty can be enjoyed by clicking on this MP3 link at April Winchell's web site: www.aprilwinchell.com... You'd be wise NOT to play it at full volume if kiddies or old farts are hovering around your PC. (9/27/08) "This is Frank Herzog, along with John Riggins and Joe Theismann." Great idea for the Redskins broadcast team. Larry Michael is HORRIBLE. Sam Huff is over the hill. Sonny is Sonny and still GREAT. #44 and #7 in the same booth. It don't get no better than that. (9/27/08) Was so caught up in quality Friday night programming like WWE Smackdown and Larry The Cable Guy, I completely forgot about the Presidential candidates' debate. Did I miss anything? Can anybody tell me if anything really good will be on when Biden and Palin debate? (9/27/08) Although not local, I just heard that Paul Newman has died. (9/27/08) Dave's response: Sorry to hear that. A great actor! Didn't he star in a film called "WUSA" - about a low-rated Gannett CBS affiliate? What about a ''hottie battle'' between Lisa Baden and the really hot Angie Goff? (9/27/08) David Letterman is much less funny when he's overly politically biased and that's probably why his ratings are tanking along with his new buddy Keith Olbermann. See, its funny when CHER no-shows and Letterman makes fun of her or other Hollywood stars because everyone just loves the Hollywood drama. Conversely, it's not all that funny when John McCain chooses to do a SERIOUS interview with CBS NEWS instead of a fluff deal with Letterman and gets lambasted for it. Letterman complaining just makes him look like a biased cranky old man in the tank for Obama. Sorry, but no matter how you slice it, Letterman looks like the ass here. And this has nothing to do with Obama vs. McCain. If Obama had done the same thing, it STILL would NOT BE FUNNY! It reminds me of that heckler at a Streisand show who yelled, "Just sing damnit! That's what I paid you all this money for!" :-) (9/27/08) You mean there are football fans in the DC area that aren't Redskins fans? Oh that is so funny! If you don't like the Redskins...don't listen to Snyders' stations. Listen to a Baltimore or some other out of town station. You non Redskins fans need to get a life! (9/25/08) This post strangely reminds me of the whole John Lennon "The Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ" dust-up of the 1960's. This poster apparently believes that if you are not a Redskins fan in the Washington, you have no life, which therefore means that the Washington Redskins are the most important part of living. Really? Dan Snyder's the Creator? Let us all drop to our knees and thank God, oops, I mean Dan, for this day. "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray to Dan my soul - and cash - to keep..." I'm grateful whoever left that original post is not in my circle of friends. I'm not into religion at all, but if I were, it wouldn't be the NFL. (9/27/08) I agree Korny must go. I watch MNF without the sound or not at all, because when Korny speaks he says nothing. He brings down the telecast. Joe T is right. Come on ESPN, wake up. Bring back Joe T. As obnoxious as Joe T is, at least he knows the game. Scott in Alexandria (9/27/08) A web site that answers all the questions the media or candidtates may try to spin one way or another is www.factcheck.org... The site uses actual quotations from CNN, FOX, etc. to compare what the candidates said in last night's debate as opposed to what they or others actually said throught he media earlier. Good Stuff! (9/27/08) Boy Theisman looks pretty good now , doesn't he? Could not agree more with the fact that Kornheiser just doesn't belong in a football booth, period--much less the formerly esteemed MNF booth. What does Korny offer as a football broadcaster? I suppose his stint on PTI where he actually is entertaining, made the suits at ESPN think that it could carry over to the MNF booth. BAD IDEA.. Let's hope Theisman is right and this will be Kornheiser's last year on football. (9/27/08) Dave, gotta go with joe on this one. Kornhole is a pain in the ass to listen to. MNF is as sorry as it's been in years. I like mike tirico and I can stomach jaworski due to his player experience and overall knowledge of the game. Kornhole looks uncomfortable when they go directly to him and he usually tries to one-up jaworski when he doesn't have a clue about some of the aspects of the game itself. Joe still knows redskin ball maybe little danny dickhead can find a spot for him on his cluster fuck of radio station's and put him together with Riggo /Herzog like a previous poster suggested. BTW, looking forward To the 8 O'clock hour on DC101 to see what GREASE has to say about his early demise curious to see where he goes with that after all he's been through this past week.......... A.M.F FROM DELMARVA.............. (9/27/08) /\ September 27 Messages /\ ![]() \/ September 26 Messages \/ It would be easy to say Theismann's comments are the result of sour grapes but, he has a valid point. Kornheiser on PTI is fine. Kornheiser on MNF is a disaster. He has nothing substantive to add and that kills the broadcast. (9/26/08) I suppose Wendy would have to get my sentimental vote for hottie. She's been a hottie much longer than Alison. And of course, Wendy likes to wear her leopard print-type fashion wear. I mean, I'm no expert of fashion. I play bluegrass for goodness sake! So, in short, I'm voting for Wendy. Just to wake up the older folks, remember the song by The Beach Boys called "Wendy"? Fitz (9/26/08) Joe on Tony, Joe has hit it right on the head. Kornholeio doesn't belong in the MNF booth. ESPN had it perfect the way it was. It's what I enjoyed about SNF. But ESPN had to put THEIR boys in the booth. They didn't want to keep paying Mike, Joe and ??? just to do MNF. I don't like it now. It's as bad as listening to Madden and Michaels. The true feelings of both McCain and Letterman surfaced on Wednesday's show....." ---- I've been watching Letterman since the NBC days and never saw any kind of political leanings until the last few years. I believe things started to change after the heart attack and definitely changed after he had his kid. Before that he probably wasn't worried about the future but things change. I think everybody has been affected by 8 years of W and Dave is probably no different. (9/26/08) Dave's response: I do agree. As he's gotten older, Letterman's gotten more political. And he definitely leans left. But, you know, the "king" of late night talk, Johnny Carson, was also a lefty. He savaged Nixon in his monologues during the late 1960s and early 1970s..... Ha! This place is hilarious. I love that after I said McCain lied, someone quotes Bill Clinton at me. As if disliking McCain must mean I like that big doofus. There are more than 2 opinions in the world, dude. It's possible to dislike McDonald's AND dislike Burger King. Just because McCain lied doesn't mean I'm a Democrat. Nor does Clinton lying mean McCain didn't. Oh, yeah, you know there are even sports fans in DC who aren't football fans let alone Redskins fans. What we'd like is a local, Washington DC sports radio station that IS NOT Redskins-centric. I really don't think that's too much to ask. BTW: it's because we DO have lives that we want to have more than just the Redskins on our sports radio station(s). Seems to me it's the Redskins fans who need to get a a life. Thank you very much. Mary B. (9/26/08) Hey "SPRINGFIELD"...."I did not have sex with that woman". Today they said Dow up 170 and Nasdaq up 30. I knew that the Dow and Nasdaq were actually down and that those were yesterday's numbers and hence the report was erronious. For the folks at WTNT to air faulty financial news everyday is beyond embarassing, it unprofessional. (9/26/08) ""This is Frank Herzog, along with John Riggins and Joe Theismann." John Riggins to Sirius/XM….Me thinks there is trouble in Redskin Land between Riggo and Snyder! I wouldn’t be surprised if Riggins doesn’t finish the year with Red Zebra because of his current “situation” with management. Snyder has proven that he doesn’t like to pay off contracts. His strategy is to make people miserable, and run you out. Mr. Herzog is still a killer announcer and I'd take him over everyone else, but IMHO both Sonny & Sam have gotten too long in the teeth. What kind of ageist bullshit is THAT? If the situation were reversed, would you say that Obama is proof that black people aren’t much at multi-tasking? Take your misinformed prejudices and go home. Dave says that occasionally let allows people to post ridiculous bigoted rants in this Mailbag just to show what fools they are. (9/26/08) Wow, I can't believe someone was listening to that Jerry Coleman interview in which he didn't know that Tom Watson wasn't playing in the tournament. Kind of tells you that some things never change...Jerry always complained how bad things/people were at 980, Jerry needs to close his mouth and improve his skills. Second point, I don't know about others, but this Vinny vs. Washington Post needs to just go away. We realize both sides don't like each other but the fans and media don't really care!!! Finally, I watched that "Redskins Nation" show for about 2-minutes this week. Not only should Snyder be held responsible for hiring bad talent like Larry Michael but Comcast is just as guilty for airing the awful propaganda. However, Frank Herzog isn't the answer to replacing Larry. Toward the end, Frank had the same problem that Larry currently has...that is never acknowledging Sonny and Sam's analysis. We need a fresh voice in this market not another re-tread. (9/26/08) So, what happens if McCain is a no-show for the debate tonight? Personally, I'm a big believer in the old adage: "The show must go on!". I think they should put an empty chair in the spot where McCain was supposed to be. That should make for some interesting (and telling) reaction shots. Better yet, Jim Lehrer should ask Barack Obama some questions and then open it up to questions/comments from the audience. McCain is living proof that older people aren't much at multi-tasking. I mean, if you're serious about being president, you really should be ready to handle more than one crisis or activity at a time. (9/26/08) Former Ravens head coach and now analyst for FOX Sports and the NFL Network seems bullish on the Ravens the team that fired him. It seems that he feels that the team will make the NFL Playoffs and in his role as analyst he seems to be a fan of the team that he no longer coaches. Times of yesterday that should clear up your concerns: www.latimes.com... 3) Finally, whoever doesn't "get" Fred Grandy's across-the-board sense of humor should stop listening to WMAL. Alex at NOVA (9/25/08) Hey Dave, Alison's getting older at the same rate Wendy is. And she has that wonderful, sexy, sparkling smile. J (9/25/08) Last night at around 6;00 PM Mark Weaver reported on WMAL the news that local gas stations were “out of gas” because of the hurricanes. Sean hammity earlier spoke of upcoming gas lines because of the hurricanes, and warned that to fix it we need to drill everywhere. Therefore, the Mark Weaver gas stations empty story worked out fine for WMAL's propaganda mission. One of the two gas stations Mark Weaver mentioned being out of gas was the Royal Service Station on Quaker Lane. So I immediately went over there, and about two minutes later saw people pumping gas at the Royal Service Center on Quaker Lane. Oh well. It turns out, the Royal station was once a Shell station and they received scheduled deliveries. For reasons I will not get into, they had to go independent, so they lost the Shell delivery infrastructure and had to go with independent jobbers. For the last week they were at the bottom of the list for deliveries from these independent guys, but they did get a delivery yesterday morning. The station in no way reflects a trend toward gas shortages, or gas lines. The guy there said no one else told him about the report on the radio, so, I guess I was the only one listening. WMAL used a scare tactic and I caught them. (9/25/08) Hey Dave, can I change my vote for the media hotties? Many women get better with age! (9/25/08) Dave's response: Just this once. I'll subtract one vote from Starling and add one to Rieger's total..... Response to a response on McCain's no-show vs. Obama's SNL no-show: I wasn't implying that McCain didn't make a gaffe by not telling Letterman that he was heading to see Couric, it was a gaffe, make no mistake about it. My point was mainly about how McCain's reasoning not to do the "Late Show" isn't all that different from Obama's backing out of SNL. I seriously doubt that McCain set out to purposely conceal is itinerary from Dave, though. It was likely just overlooked by the campaign staff, assuming that Dave wouldn't get all in a wad by the senator going on CBS News instead....OK, so they assumed wrong. That doesn't make it a bald-faced lie however. If you'd read my whole post before, you'd see that I'm not very impressed with EITHER of these candidates... Each unqualified in their own ways. You have to wonder how many election cycles we have to go through before we all realize that the 2 major parties continue to serve up people who cannot get the job done--be it the presidency or Congress. The very best thing we could do is gradually start disassembling the Dems and the GOP, and come up with a hybrid of sorts, that doesn't cling to all the left & right fringes for support. In '92, Perot tried to break up the monopoly, but failed. Someone, sooner or later is going to HAVE to. **off the soapbox** (9/25/08) Hey. (9/25/08) Dave I don't get it. People have the right to trash the right and their criticism is mostly fair. But why do not people take the same approach to the left media? If you go after FOX and Ruppert, then why not go after the networks. They are just as far left as FOX is to the right. Wouldn't the best thing be to have all networks report the news impartially. Both sides. For some reason when people trash FOX, they tend to let the networks off the hook for their liberal views. The networks are just as bad as FOX. Hard, cold facts...Take it or leave it. (9/25/08) Luke Russert made the rookie mistake of speaking the politically indelicate truth. UVA is widely-known to be the top-rated and most selective academic institution in Virginia (just ahead of W&M). And, as they have since the 2000 campaign, the GOP has made anti-intellectualism a big part of their pitch. So Russert was just saying out loud what everyone already knows—that the best-educated are Obama supporters and the least-educated are not. The Republican Party has worked this angle for the past eight years and it’s worked pretty well for them. Give him time and Russert will learn to lie by talking around such facts. What’s the big deal? As far as the poster’s comments that “Virginia scores solidly in the middle for higher education, and behind Maryland,” that’s pretty much nonsense. Virginia is the larger state and has many more colleges and a far bigger range of college students. But at the very top, none of Maryland’s public universities are in the same league as the University of Virginia or William & Mary. On the private school side, though, Maryland’s Johns Hopkins University is light years ahead of any other college in either state. (9/25/08) Been watchin the “bitch slappers”. Russert's idiot son said 'smartest kids in the STATE". As if UVA is on a par with Harvard or Yale. NOT. At least he didnt insult the entire country. Looking at the Census data for 2006, which is the last year with a full report, it appears that the phrase 'big fish in a small pond' might also be applicable. It's kinda like being the smartest kid in a class of retards. Virginia scores solidly in the middle for higher education, and behind Maryland. (9/25/08) Dave's response: If Northern Virginia was a state, as it should be, I think its students would be on-par with those in Maryland. It would be interesting if Arbitron measured the IQ of radio station listeners. How would WMAL's listeners rate with WAMU's or WTOP's? Hmmm..... The liberal media in this country is horrible. These are the same people who trash Palin yet seem to adore Obama who has done nothing. The reason people dont like Rush or O'Reilly because both tell it like it is. Love ya like a brother – J.J. “Hitman” McKay (9/25/08) Regarding the Nats’ radio frequencies for next season, Charlie Slowes announced on-air over this past weekend that they’ve gotten a lot of questions/complaints on the subject. He said that there will be a new affiliate to cover the areas west of DC where 1500 doesn’t come in very well. He made it sound like a done deal, or at least close to it, though there was no specific information given. Stay tuned… (9/25/08) Dave's response: WINC-FM (92.5) would work..... Ed: You made a great point. Although many on this board pick fights with the brains behind CBS Baltimore; but the cluster makes money and has strong numbers. WLIF is #2 35-64, #4 12+ and doing VERY strong 25-54. WWMX has the strongest numbers in history, and guess, WITHOUT a consultant. WQSR is making money with a very little staff (1 person, which is the PD!). I would flip WHFS and make it country as well, current based, to give WPOC a charge. WPOC is stale and needs some help. WQSR could go a little more oldies-based, but with little tweaking needed. WWMX would go LIVE at nights 7p-12p, to target the younger demo and hopefull pull away from WERQ's night numbers. I'd take WLIF a little more current based, playing some more of the established artists that are on the AC charts....but very little change! (9/25/08) I Think John Riggins should have the 10-12 Noon shift on ESPN 980. I did like his show before and they could make Kevin Sheenhan his cohost just like on the old station. It would also get Colin Cowhurd of the air at last here in DC here is awful and he seems to have a hatred for the Redskins for no reason at all. (9/25/08) /\ September 25 Messages /\ ![]() \/ September 24 Messages \/ Hey... I heard a CAH-RAY-ZEE rumor that Steve "Alan" Allan might have left WASH and WBIG?!? I also heard that, in the near future, he would be working in Detroit, then going to WJZW. I'm jus' sayin'... Do you think that could be true? lol b-slap again! woo hoo!!!! (9/24/08) First of all I have to this to say Larry Michael it is okay To be critical of the team you don't have to be so postive all the time because you just sound like a shill for the team and people don't respect that. Now I know there are lot of Nats fans that were hoping that because baseball is back in DC it would be No 1 again but it will never be the Redskins will always be No 1 here. It is nice BaseBall is back but everyone needs to accept that at best it will be the No 2 sport. (9/24/08) Steve Alan poster. Get a freakin life. What part of forgetfulness did you miss? I’ve forgotten more about radio than you have lived in your lifetime. The only thing I do know is being nice to people gets you a lot further than the bullshit you keep posting. (9/24/08) Dave in Sterling has either been living under a rock or is spreading misinformation. Ms. Umstattd was a Republican years and years ago but switched to the Democrat Party. A quick search shows she gave to Mark Warner way back in 1996. KRISTEN C UMSTATTD (ATTORNEY), (Zip code: 22075) $250 to FRIENDS OF MARK WARNER on 09/19/96 Sorry Dave in Sterling...you got caught up in your own spin. I know more about Loudoun County politics then anyone should... :-) (9/24/08) Dave's response: Getting off topic..... OK, this is my last missive on this non-radio, increasingly non-TV topic, Re: "If I'm to contribute that amount to a presidential candidate (we're a single-income family as well), then I better be voting for said candidate or otherwise my husband will divorce me!" I agree. But I don't think NBC was claiming these people decided ON THE AIR who they were going to vote for. They obviously made their contribution -- $345 from residents of the wealthiest county in the country, where the median family income is $113,000 annually, to a campaign that has raised almost $460 million -- after they made their decision. So what? The grand conspiracy, as always, does not exist. Now....can we please get back to killing off the Greaseman? Dave in Sterling (9/24/08) Dave of Sterling: Don't know 'bout you, but a $345 contribution for a single-income family as the Jansen's (the piece focused on the father's line of work for the military, but didn't say anything about the mom's line of work, which the viewer then assumes is a stay-at-home mom) is a big chunk o' change. If I'm to contribute that amount to a presidential candidate (we're a single-income family as well), then I better be voting for said candidate or otherwise my husband will divorce me! -Silvie- (9/24/08) If only I had been born rich instead of increadably good looking, I would buy WLIF and return it to the music it played in the late 1960's and 1970's. Re: "Amy Robach stated in her piece this morning on NBC's 'Today Show' that 'neither (of the Jansen's) are affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties'. Yet Ann Jansen contributed $345 to the Obama campaign in March 2008." I'm not sure anyone else would claim that contributing $345 to a presidential campaign constitutes an affiliation with a political party. If so, there are tens of thousands of companies, organizations and individuals who are "affiliated" with multiple parties -- and have contributed far more than $345 to each of them. I'm also not sure anyone else would say that NBC had been "duped" by a "bigtime Democratic campaign official/contributor," or claim that NBC was somehow perpetuating some kind of fraud, based on that $345. The silliness of your accusations is amazing. Dave in Sterling (9/24/08) 'Ey Grease... those bloody death rumors can be a flippin' drag, can't they? -Paul "Cranberry Sauce" McCartney (9/24/08) Dave's response: If it gets an audience erection for the Grease, maybe there could be an "Is G. Gordon Liddy Dead?" hoax campaign next..... (Why do you think CBS-Baltimore didn't flip Jack to Classic Hits, because it would hurt 101.9 Lite-FM) BUZZ! Care to try again? The closer answer is... *JACK is generating revenue as is, so there is no need to mess with it.* Or, I could pull something like a well known poster and say that Dave LaBrozzi is an a**hole, but I won't - cause that ain't it, Bunky. Radio 101, Michael. The *revenue* is the bottom line. You should know that from your own Baltimore, um, career. (9/24/08) Dave, I apologize for the multiple emails today, but the Mailbag is being overwhelmed by misinformation. Just to clarify: Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd is NOT a Democrat, she's a Republican who ran as an independent in the last election. So, again, I'm left wondering how the Jansen family "duped" NBC by hiding some secret DNC connection. Dave in Sterling (9/24/08) Frank Zappala! Wow, a name out of the past. Affectionately known as "Frankie the "Z" at WMUC in College Park back in the mid 60's. All around good guy and a real broadcast survivor in DC. Glad to hear he was doing well. Bobby Dee with the goodies. (9/24/08) So, what would you do with CBS stations in Baltimore? If they accept my $4.00 bid, here's what I would do. Minimal changes for WLIF (#4 12+) WWMX (#6 12+) and WQSR (#10 12+). Just because I'm an ego maniac, I might screw with the music on WQSR a little, and probably try to talk Ken Merson into mid-days on WLIF. But, and it's a big but, WHFS format and call letters have to go. I would take it country and go right after WPOC (#3 in Baltimore). WPOC has lived a long time on reputation and are ripe for the picking. At one time they had the second biggest news team in Baltimore radio and some great community connections. Now the are an exclusive format - - a battle would be fun. Not to mention the possibility of trimming their share to one that would move WLIF up a notch. I would tell you how, but you may win the bid. Then with just two urban stations beating WLIF, wait for the PPM to see what happens. WJFK is an AM with a 0.05 share. It sucks. I guess I'll make that my I-pod. Ed Graham (9/24/08) Regarding the Today Show NBC debate. It should be noted that in the segment the Jansen's say they are not affiliated with the Republican or Democrat party. As most know, in VA you do not register by party. This is how they probably tricked the producers who do not know this fact. The only way to be involved is to join a local committe. The Loudoun Republican committe comprises of fewer than 200 people and the Louduon Democrat Committee is fewer than that. Not many residents are involved with the party's, but the Jansen's obviously have supported democrats in the past, including numerous local politicians including Leesburg Mayor Umstattd. (9/24/08) Dave in Sterling: No need for 'bomb-throwing' here. Amy Robach stated in her piece this morning on NBC's "Today Show" that "neither (of the Jansen's) are affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties". Yet Ann Jansen contributed $345 to the Obama campaign in March 2008. So the piece itself, which was supposed to focus on 'undecided' VA voters, was no such thing. Here's a link to that video: loudounextra.washingtonpost.com... -Silvie- (9/24/08) Micheal P,you're a breath of fresh air, you're honest, dedicated to the broadcast industry and come up with some pretty good ideas, at least to me. Your contributions and your way of thanking your mentors goes a long way towards enjoying your posts. We, the vets of the industry used to have the luxury of working with people like you and watching the progress we were able to contribute to the younger broadcasters. In my book just keep on postng your thoughts on this jaded industry available. I used to love to work with the newbies...nowadays, most of the industry is full of paranoid insecure talking heads. Paul (9/24/08)Dave's response: No, that was Tom Sater. I'm told that Mr. Sater looks a lot like the Greaseman now that he's a tractor salesman in Warrenton. Sure beats working for Rupert Murdoch, huh..... As I have mentioned before I have learned a lot since my ESRTV days and would have done some things differently but you live and learn. I don't believe I have mentioned anyone should get let go on here in a long time, like years "so consistently suggesting worthwhile and deserving vetreans get replaced and lose their jobs"--Name me a jock, show me the messages. By the way why do you think A/C, WLTW started going down some, it was because and has been because of WCBS-FM. Q105 is 70s-Now, The Wave is one of the few oldies stations left playing 50s and 60s. There is actually no cross over with the music between them and Q...However if BIG 100.3 went classic hits 60s-80s, two of four decades of WASH-FM plays would be crossed over with, they could segment each of what they play but there is no question it would segment the WASH-FM audiance...Why do you think CBS-Baltimore didn't flip Jack to Classic Hits, because it would hurt 101.9 Lite-FM. Enough said. -Michael Popovec (9/24/08) Oh! What a lovely fall day. Dad and I just returned from having the Hudson greased and the oil changed and I can attest, beyond all doubt, that the grease man is quite alive! At least, he was when we saw him over at the Flying A service station on Holabird Avenue about fifteen minutes ago. Well, it may have been more like an hour because Dad and I stopped by Neptunes over near Merritt Boulevard for a couple of crab rolls to bring home. Now, someone made mention of WTOW AM and FM and I recall when that station first hit the airwaves with a bang! Oh, we were so jealous because, as Dundalkers, our little WAYE had to "sign down at sun down" as Ken Waylath used to say. But, those snobbies up in Towson had one of those FM radio stations that played on into the night. We did not like their uppity attitude so we just stayed with Johnny Contino on WCBM or, if we were up very late, Cap'n. Harley's Jazz Show on Radio 11 WBAL. We were also remembering a great "Lonely Hearts" show that Zena Sherman did. It promoted friendship and love and, once in a great while, two people who met from that show would wind up dating or married. I think that it was on WCAO or WITH but dad thinks it was on WFBR. I know that it was done from a theatre in downtown Baltimore, but Dad would never take me to be in the audience because we would have had to circle around on East Baltimore Street to park and you know what kind of neighborhood that was back in those days. Do they still call that "The Block?" Now, I think that he is a very nice boy and I certainly do not want anyone to get the wrong idea, but isn't that little Michael Poopavich getting a little too big for his britches? He writes to the mailbag as though he were a big expert on radio from New York or Hollywood. I'm going to tell him when I see him next time that I think a young man should be humble! He was raised well. Many's the time I saw his mother paddle him with a hairbrush right in the middle of Patterson Park or the Two Guys if he acted up. Maybe that's what he needs again. Oh! I wish I could remember the name of that lonely hearts program! Now, I know that WTOW became WFEL and turned very religious. It was not Lutheran but one of those Holy Roller denominations. Didn't Royal Parker work at WAYE or WTOW when he was getting started? Something else happened, too. When the kids were here over the weekend, they wanted some of that rock and roll on and switched my kitchen radio to WWIN. But, I don't think that Jack Gale is there anymore! The music was nice but I don't think that was Jack speaking. It's sad to see so much change come all at once like that. Well... I guess we just have to smile and be thankful for those that we still have. So, Dad said that we could go do some visiting in Lutherville today. Please take care of your selves and bundle up tonight if you have to go out. It's a bit chilly. Fondly, The Cleavers (9/24/08) News anchor Denise Dory has been absent on air at WMAR-TV 2 .. (9/24/08) hey "Paul"....what is an " AOL station" ??? did you mean AOR, or were you talking about the recent pairing of CBS and AOL radio..?? not sure on that one...though it was nice to see the anger level toned down a ...bit. as for Grease...if indeed this is a "stunt" how about the death of the Greaseman character..the rebirth of Doug as a personality for....a new 94.7 Globe morning show? just a thought... great idea to get the other stations talking about it... (9/24/08) "Everyone seems to love Buzz Burbank. I for one have disdain for the man who inserts his wacko views in every news and comment." Relax. No one takes Buzz, Mike, or anyone on that show seriously when it comes to political commentary. It's certainly not their strong point. (9/24/08) Roach, just after 5:00 PM, when normal business hours are over and there is peak listening, went on the air and said the Greaseman died. The station then went into music for the rest of the evening. Mike O’Meara received dozens of calls alerting him, and he said on the air there is a rumor, he didn’t mention what the rumor was, and they were trying to confirm it before talking about it. That was the right, responsible thing to do. I am sure the MOM show tried to call DC101 and didn’t get an answer. Top management at DC101 had to know and approve this stunt. Elliot, this morning, treated it as nothing more than a curiosity. Roach gave a vague explanation this morning on Elliot. Now, look at the situation; the youtube video, announcement, the music only evening, and the fake website entry had been coordinated, albeit awkwardly. DC101 screwed up a radio hoax. Hasn’t radio management learned something from the Opie and Dopey “the Mayor is dead” April fool’s joke fiasco? You don’t use the airwaves to joke that someone died. It is called “broadcasting,” and “news” of someone’s death being broadcasted still has a sense of legitimacy for most people. This was a gross stunt, and DC101 top management should apologize to the market, Doug’s friends and family, acquaintances, and the radio community for this planned blunder. (9/24/08) re: "Does Michael Popovec even attempt to read his emails before he sends them in to dcrtv?"...he's the only "professional" (because he ought to know better so I use that term loosely, plus he is kinda in the business) who consistanly suggests that worthwhile and deserving area veterans get replaced and lose their jobs as he tries to impress people with his "wanna be PD thoughts". If I were a major market PD (and I'm not)..and his disc/resume were sitting on my desk it would easily find it's way into the round file. (9/24/08) (RE - Dave's response: From what I understand, the Nationals will still be heard on both 1500 and 107.7 next season, even though the former is now WFED and the latter is now a relay of WTOP.....) No. 107.7 will remain a 100% simulcast for Arbitron PPM simulcast reasons. They are looking for a NoVa signal to add to 1500 and 820 for next season. (9/24/08) I think some explanation is in order, Re: "Today show gets duped!!! On the Today Show they highlighted a Leesburg, VA family who claimed to be a family crossing party lines to vote for Obama. Ann Janse has been an outspoken Democratic leader in Loudoun for many years!! Nice research NBC(DNC)." In the first place, the women's name is Ann Jansen. She is a member of a homeowners' association, but her name isn't mentioned anywhere on the Loudoun County Democratic Committee web site, she's never run for office and a Google of her name and "Democrat" shows no matches. On another website (the ultraRight FreeRepublic.com), someone referencing the above Mailbag post claims that Jansen "is a bigtime Democratic campaign official/contributor in Loudoun County, VA," yet campaign finance records indicate she donate just $50 to Kerry's presidential campaign and $345 to Obama's. In a letter to the editor of Leesburg Today a couple of years ago she thanked two independent, one Democratic and one Republican member of the Board of Supervisors for their work. So I'd appreciate the unnamed bomb-thrower revealing Jansen's "Bigtime" connection to the Democratic party that apparently only he knows about. Dave in Sterling (9/24/08) To those on the short bus: IF you heard Roche on DC-101 yesterday, you heard him say what the You Tube video and indicated and that... "WE'RE TRYING TO GET CONFIRMATION." At NO POINT did he hit the air and say, "Okay, it's official... Doug Tracht expired today, " or draw any other conclusion about the allegation. And you, Mr. Hughes, who obviously did not hear Roche's actual broadcast, are sitting there proposing the punishment to be meted out? What makes you think that the station is behind this? I think you owe Hartley and Thea an apology... or you, sir, are worse than Hitler! - Celebrity Catch Phrase Impersonated (9/24/08) Dave's response: The first thing I did when I heard the Grease rumors was to tune into 101.1 and I did indeed hear Roche announce, or come awfully damn close, to his audience that Mr. Tracht was history. I even detected a sense of smarm or glee in his voice, which told me right away that it was a hoax. Got a question - why does CC keep putting small town radio clowns into the DC101 PD post? Oh, let's do a "Greaseman is dead" hoax! Man. Might play in Allentown or Mobile, but not here. Sheesh..... How well known is the Greaseman outside of D.C. radio? I had the impression that most people outside the market knew about him only for his two scandals about racist jokes. As an analogy, I didn't know about Tom Leykis until I read Marc Fisher's book about radio, even though most Angelenos probably know the name even if they aren't listeners. (9/24/08) Larry Michael siding with Vinnie Cerato? Who woulda thunk that Michael would side with Redskin management and want to keep his job? (9/24/08) I think CC should attempt to move WBIG into an Oldies/Classic Rock/Classic Hits mix. The playlist is way too small for it to go anywhere and they play the same tired Classic Rock songs every other station plays. Then again that is the way Clear Channel does radio. Everyone here always says CBS would never take WQSR back to a Classic Hits format due to WLIF, and that it would step on the toes of WLIF. I wouldn't think so because the station appeals to two different listeners. Also one good point is the WCBS-FM & Fresh are both aimed to bring down the ratings of NY's Lite 106.7. (9/24/08) Greaseman.org now says “The Greaseman… one of a kind… Announcement coming soon…” (9/24/08) Re: "Grease Is Alive, Angry About Death Rumor" -- Quick! Somebody call for a Congressional Investigation! ... Re : "Larry Michael Backs Skins VP In Post Dispute" -- Surprise, surprise! (9/24/08) How exactly can WTTG/5 promote a 12 p.m. broadcast of the Maryland/Virginia football game a week from Saturday when the ACC announced a start time of 7 p.m. on ESPNU or ESPN360? They can't both be right. Everett W. (9/24/08) As I recall, Grease doesn't give many ass whoopings. He prefers fudge packings, after he thoughtfully gives his intended victim a fanbelt to bite down on. (9/24/08) Wow, what a shock -- Larry "Igor" Michael rode to the defense of Vinny Cerrato? When Igor's on the TTDSRN (Teeny-Tiny Danny Snyder Radio Network), right along with Vinny "Fredo" Cerrato? When Larry Michael's main claim to fame, and basis of his present employment, is that the Skins can do no wrong? Face it -- if Vinny Cerrato took a huge dump on the 50-yard-line at Fed Ex, and following it up by buggering a sheep on the 45-yard-line, Igor would (a) tell us that Vinny was just fertilizing the field, and that it smelled like roses and violets; and (b) tell us that Vinny's always had an interest in animal husbandry, and that this was part of his graduate studies. Igor's a house man, an apologist, a waste of oxygen. He's Dana Perino in a Redskins polo shirt. He's Baghdad Bob, with less dignity. Call me when Igor DOESN'T support Fredo. Or Danny. Or the Zornado. Or any dope in burgundy-and-gold. Sheesh. What's more interesting is the time and energy being expended by the Skins front office (I won't say "brain trust") against Jason LaCanfora of the Post. Sincerely, TMU. (9/24/08) hey Dave, any info on anyone picking up Glenn Beck now that he's off 1500? thanks. (9/24/08) (Snippet) I meant it was funny that there is a reader of DCRTV that drove by [Grease's] place. (teppinS) A reader... A READER?!?...you ignoramus, did it ever occur to you that it might have been a personal friend of Doug's concerned about what was seen on the Web, and not just some radio nerd hoping to pull up a corner of his lawn as a souvenir? Ever get scared that someone close to you wasn't picking up the phone and perhaps might be injured or worse? You'd be in your car at light speed too. Jeez fella, do us a favor: next time you have a passing thought, just let it pass. (9/24/08) Today show gets duped!!! On the Today Show they highlighted a Leesburg, VA family who claimed to be a family crossing party lines to vote for Obama. Ann Janse has been an outspoken Democratic leader in Loudoun for many years!! Nice research NBC(DNC). (9/24/08) DAVE, Unfortunately the power of the internet is far reaching in a situation like this with the GREASE'S early demise. There should be some action against those that perpetrated the story from the start. I would start with the ass clown on youtube who posted the story. Then slap a heavy fine on His own Station for not finding out any real facts before going on the air live and telling the listeners that he was in fact Deceased. A few of us heard it on DC101 during Roche's show. Maybe Roche needs to step up to the plate and take a serious ass-whoopin' from the Grease himself..Thanks for getting to the bottom of it. Mark/bethesda (9/24/08) Everyone seems to love Buzz Burbank. I for one have disdain for the man who inserts his wacko views in every news and comment. Yesterday he crossed the line. I will be calling WJFK for an on-air apology. During the political spew on the Mike O'mera show they were discussing how Sarah Palin is a heartbeat away from the presidency. Buzz stated that McCain has had three heart attacks. Maybe he was confused and mixed McCain up with Vice President Cheney or maybe he was spreading a total lie. (9/24/08) Does Michael Popovec even attempt to read his emails before he sends them in to dcrtv? I can't imagine how that poor boy gets to work every day, let alone helps the Cleavers with their groceries at the Acme. Why couldn't WBIG as "classic hits" and WASH co-exist, Michael? WCBS and "Fresh 102.7" certainly co-exist in the same building in New York. Even on your little strip of DelMarVa, Q105 (the WASH clone) and "The Wave" (Oldies) live together. Of course, Ocean City is a small market. Maybe it works there. You work there, you know that. Oh - and to quote..."If I were Dan Snyder" - you'd be considerably shorter, a little stockier, and a much better dancer. Clean up on aisle four...ZS. (9/24/08) We already have "Click & Clack" automotive show. What is this Greaseman program? I don't think cars really have enough maintenance items the owner can do, especially getting underneath and greasing fittings on the steering. A whole show devoted to THAT ? Gad, it would be like watching oil drain into the pan. I'll come back later. (9/24/08) Did 1500 AM, WFED drop Jim Bohannon, Phil Hendrie and I guess also Jerry Doyle? After the Nats some boring home and family finance show came on talking about pets and foot traffic. (9/24/08) Greaseman ''passing away'' is possibly one of the most idiotic stunts of all time. That's almost as bad as hiring a PD to ''program'' both a AOL AND a classic rock station. Someone pass me 2 more nails to drive into the coffin of regular radio. Paul (9/24/08) “From what I understand, the Nationals will still be heard on both 1500 and 107.7 next season, even though the former is now WFED and the latter is now a relay of WTOP.....” The Nats will be heard on 1500 and 820 AM next season, but not 107.7. Of course it’s always possible that another FM in that area may pick them up, however… -Brian (9/24/08) Dave, I didn't mean that you put someone up to that, I meant it was funny that there is a reader of DCRTV that drove by his place. Gotcha on Dan Snyder and the FMs, but my point is as you have pointed out--if the new PD and PPM does not work for BIG 100.3, they will most likely sell which would enable him to buy. -MP (9/24/08) /\ September 24 Messages /\ ![]() \/ September 23 Messages \/ Dave, you have some loyal readers, you actually had a person drive by Doug Tracht's house, lol, wow (don't worry Don G won't be doing that to you even though I live right down the way, lol)...Guess BIG 100.3 wouldn't go full out Classic Hits like a CBS-FM in NY because of WASH-FM in the building, too bad, I think that would save them especially if they threw together a good morning show, brought back a Johnny Dark for instance and tried to get the simulcast of the Redskins back...If I were Dan Snyder I would buy 100.3 in a heartbeat and dump everything else except 980 if he were so able to even if he had to take a loss on 92.7, 94.3, 570 and 1260...If the content were the same why would WBAL on FM be any different. I might be the exception being 28 but its the content, I don't care if its on AM. I still think putting Steve Rouse on 9am-Noon would help with what they want to do with that slot, he would be great for a local entertaining Baltimore show. It will be interesting to see what will happen once they lose Fox Sports at night, wonder if they would consider playing a re-run of Laura Ingraham's Show for instance to go up against Les Kinsolving and Michael Savage or go back to being local from 9pm-Midnight. If they stayed with sports, you know Tony Bruno has signed a syndication deal with Dan Patrick's syndicator's, the show will air 10pm-1am EST, he would be great get and it would also go up against Dan Patrick on 105-7. Michael Popovec (9/23/08) Dave's response: I didn't ask anyone to drive by the Greaseman's house. Someone did so on their own accord and then told me about it. If you Google News his name, you get nothing except the gossip banter. If he really died, one might expect there would be some blurb however small from some reasonably credible news source. (9/23/08) Dave's response: I'm reasonably sure it's a hoax. However, Clear Channel's DC101 could get into some serious hot water with the FCC for running fake reports on Tuesday afternoon about the alleged demise of one of its personalities. Someone really should file a formal complaint with the Commission. You might even see the new DC101 PD led to the "radio gallows" for this stupid stunt. According to Radio-locator.com the WLIF & WNST towers are on the same piece of property, basically right next to each other. I know AM1570 used to be called WTOW, not sure about WLIF's original calls, but didn't they used to at one time be an AM/FM combo? Question is, are they separately owned pieces of property? (which is big enough for a small development of VERY EXPENSIVE McMansions I might add) I doubt it and honestly, I find it hard to believe Dundalk Nasty Nestor owns that piece of land even if they are separate! So if the land is sold, WNST would be in a serious bind. Maybe CBS is hoping WNST goes off the air and DC's WPGC 1580 can expand its nighttime signal? I know they are based out of DC but why do you care about DC and going after WASH, WLIF is billing extremely well in Baltimore, I really don't think WASH listeners would jump to WLIF even with a signal tweak if for anything the local content would be different...One can only hope that one of these CBS stations that gets bought in Baltimore flips to a new oldies-Classic Hits (60s, 70s, 80s station)...To the one poster: Why would 101.9 signal being moved if it happened possibly make WNST go off the air, they are not on the same tower....While the 101.9 tower does sit on some expensive land you couldn't make a development out of it, its not that big. Other than Bozo (and that was a franchise) and apparently Wonderama (the syndication of which I never knew about until now, which is I love this site), the attempt to go national w/an identifiably local-based character has usually crashed and burned in a grim "Crusty the Clown" type of way. I'm thinking in particular of "Uncle Floyd" Vivino, a beloved Northern New Jersey children's show host and comedian whose transition to national exposure via the peacock network was like watching a long, drawn out multi-vehicle car crash. First shown on afternoons, the show became quickly seen as too sophisticated (or sophomoric) for kids and ended up forlorn and alone on the Saturday-Sunday overnight after Saturday Night Live and Second City TV, consistently losing to Joe Franklin until it spun off into the dark screaming and out of control like Darth Vader's Imperial Fighter at the end of Star Wars IV…... (9/23/08) I bought a 50W JVC HD radio unit for my pick-up for $99.99-$20 coupon-$50 rebate. It has a CD player and does MP3s and WMA--total was $41 after tax and shipping. I figured I had nothing to lose if the HD radio thing didn't work out. Maybe it's the factory-installed powered antenna pre-amp but I have received every FM HD channel in this area--and surprisingly, 98 Rock in Baltimore much of the time. The sound stays in sync during the rare times the radio drops to analog. At worst, it sounds like a small phase shift. I also get 570, 630, and 980 in HD. HD AM sound quality is almost like FM except there is absolutely no noise and no FM multi-path nulls. AM goes back and forth under bridges but if you're moving at hwy speeds, there seems to be enough buffering that digital stays on. AM HD does drop more frequently, though. I wish there was an AM HD that played music regularly to hear what that sounds like, especially in stereo. If it worked for everyone the way it does for me, it would definitely bring back AM listening. I don't know what's up with factory HD radios, but mine works great for me (for now anyway). Cheers! (9/23/08) Ah, yes, Wonderama, the Sunday morning TV G-dsend of many a young'un. Growing up in the "beautiful" borough of Queens, NY, I was one of the lucky few who got tickets (a 4 year waiting list...almost as bad as the Redskins!!!) to attend a taping at the WNEW studios on East 67th Street. If memory serves this now 45 year old brain, the show was taped on Tuesday afternoon's, and took about 7 hours from beginning to end. The cartoons and commercials were inserted after the fact, and Bob McAllister smoked like a chimney during his breaks. My memory of winning a game from Professor Fingleheimer (for answering one of his questions right) still lingers, as does my memory of my revered grandmother attempting to fashion a "Mike Fury" costume for me for Halloween!!! Long since gone is my Wonderama LP with all the songs that have been discussed on this board in the last day. :-( Shortly before Bob died, he made an in-store appearance at a Long Island Noodle Kidoodle/Zany Brainy to perform some of his beloved magic. Sadly, only about 30 people showed up...most of them "grown-ups" like me who longed, just for a moment, to re-live some happy Sunday morning memories with their favorite kid show host!!! I must say, now I know why NBC fired/paid-off/shelved George Michael. Everyone got tired of his shtick and it no longer plays...it included tossing the soft questions to Joe Gibbs and Joe Bugel every Monday and now, helping Dan Snyder with his propaganda campaign by having Vinny do a weekly radio show. This is where people like Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin should take advantage of Snyder's double-standard and continue to be critical or "tell-it like it is" by playing the role of the Washington area sports fan. This entire dinner theater atmosphere makes me look for the out-of-town programming on satellite radio or the internet. (9/23/08) Re a previous post: I doubt that Dave Willingham's departure from NewsChannel8 had anything to do with age discrimination. He had absolutely no "on-air presence." I used to cringe whenever he was on. I think he as a true dinosaur in the tv news business. Contrast and compare his performances and on-air persona with the very professional Ron Riley (probably about the same age). Actually, no comparison at all. (9/23/08) Dave's response: If Ron Riley was a DJ on Chicago's WLS in the 1960s, that must make him 75 or so, right? Very well-preserved..... It's kind of interesting that B'Ville launched a sports talker in the mid-west recently. Could we see what was supposed to be Sports 104.1 (prior to Praise) on 100.3??? (9/23/08) Dave's response: What, Bonneville buys 100.3? I know they're hunting for signals. But I'd bet that if Bonneville buys another DC FMer, they'd do something musical with it. (9/22/08) A few years ago I saw a clip on You Tube of Bob McAllister and Wonderama. The clip is gone now but I do remember seeing Bob talking about doing some public appearance at Six Flags Over Texas so that makes me believe that Wonderama aired on TV in Dallas. When Bob passed away in 1998 I remember when the press made it seem like he was totally forgotten by TV after his short live role on Kids Are People Too. Actually Bob McAllister over the years had a LOT of chances to return to TV but for some reason, he never did. Both Monty Hall and Merv Griffin wanted Bob to get into game shows and I think Hall even had Bob host one episode of Lets Make A Deal as a "test" not too mention I believe ABC back in the 70's was looking at McAllister at doing a sitcom for them too. I am pretty sure Nickelodeon ( when the channel was a non-commerical outlet ) offered Bob a job too, only to have Bob say no. No this man had chances to go nationwide and be a household name. Why Bob McAllister said NO, of course nobody can answer. Maybe he felt that his style would be better on a regional basis. If that is true then Bob wasn't alone. Back in the 80s singer Alice Cooper wanted to take Phoenix's kiddie show Wallace & Ladmo show nationwide but the two guys who played Wallace & Ladmo decided it would be best to keep their show strictly for Phoenix TV viewers. Cincinatti's Bob Braun was offered to go "national" too back in the 70s ( or was it the 80s? ). At the time "Braun & Company" aired in a number of midwestern markets like Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington (?) Columbus, Huntington and of course Cincinatti but for some reason Bob vetoed that idea and I believe Boston's Natalie Jacobson was offered a ton of money to work for ABC News, however Natalie decided to remain with WCVB instead. Dittos with Denver's Paula Woodward and come to think of it I think even channel 9's Carol Randolf at one time had the chance to syndicate "Morning Break" to other stations but that never happened either. Not every local "star" wants to be the next Oprah Winfrey. (9/22/08) Dennis Miller runs live from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. WAGE in Leesburg runs it from 9 until noon. The 9-10 hour is usually the last hour from the previous day’s show. (9/22/08) Some assorted thoughts: 1) Why the monickers "McCain 570" and "Obama 1260"? They will be definition have a short shelf life. "Red 570" and "Blue 1260" make far more sense, unless Dan Snyder fears some folks still equate "red" with "communist" or that the really old listeners would think NBC radio was back in business with its pre-1943 networks. 2) Now that Bonneville is going FM sports talk in St. Louis, might it have plans to do likewise with 100.3 if it gets WBIG from Clear Channel? As I've stated before, it would solve the problem of losing 107.7 to WTOP for Nationals and Capitals play-by-play, and it has one of the area's best FM signals. And in some ways, St. Louis is comparable to Washington in that the market's dominant pro team -- in this case, baseball's Cardinals -- own their own AM sports talker. So Bonneville could take a similar counterprogramming approach. -- Vincent in Triangle (9/22/08) If on WTNT Dennis Miller moves to noon to 3PM I believe that he will be heard live and not on delay as he was before. Another thing. I don’t understand why 570 and 1260 aren’t cross promoting the stations since it’s the same ownership . While I’m more of a “red state” guy and don’t listen much to 1260, it only makes sense that if the folks who are listening to one of the stations and disagree with the POV that they should be told to try the other. (9/22/08) A musical note about "Wonderama" ... I had tried for years, to find the music that was used on the show, but I was working with incorrect information. I had been told that it came from an album called "Music From An I.B.M. Machine", but much of the electronic/moog-ish music is from the duo, Perrey & Kingsley. Their albums are on iTunes -- "The Out Sound from Way In" and "The In Sound from Way Out". There is also a new collection by Perrey and Countryman, called "The Happy Electropop Music Machine". It's some fun stuff to listen to, so check it out! (9/22/08) According a tip from a friend up there, N.Y. state is busting Verizon bigtime for not grounding FiOS installations. (9/22/08) RE: [ CBS Sale of WLIF 101.9 ]........... Well, I'll say one thing, Lite 102's transmitter sits on extremely valuable land northeast of Towson, MD, so moving the transmitter could definitely generate some money if CBS owns the land. That was the main motivation behind Clear Channel moving WCHH 104.3 to TV Hill as that Kingsville transmitter also sits on pretty valuable land for housing development. By the way, the 104.3 tower is still there, I saw it last week when out that way, but it is getting serious encroachment from the White Marsh housing boom, which even in a bad housing market appears to still be ongoing. One other thing though, moving Lite 102 would not help out WNST 1570 at all and possibly put them off the air or on an STA situation where even LESS people would be able to receive them than even now! Finally, isn't there an FM 101.9 in Charlottesville, VA that has a signal to Culpeper? Seems to me that and the adjacent DC channels would preclude moving much closer to DC, but maybe the WPOC, or old WNUV towers west of Baltimore? Or from, say, another religious station's tower, WRBS, southwest of Baltimore? Hmmmmm. Would definitely be a much stronger DC signal from there. (9/22/08) And while we're on the subject of Wonderama...does anybody here have an aardvark? alr (9/22/08) Hey ACH, William Jefferson Clinton and Democrats and every Republicans for the past 40 years has been somewhat responsible for this financial problem. They want to brag more Americans own loans during their presidency. Ric Edelman had it right on his financial show on Saturday. We have made mortgage loans much easier to maintain over the years. NINJA (No Income No Job or Assets) loans were very popular under Slick Willie and Bush 41. You can borrow up to 100% of the value of the house, and people were just sending the interest payments or less and little principal. Old days we paid a 20% down payment and a mortgage. WE ARE TO BLAME FOR THIS MESS. When I think of that show, I think of nothing but Sonny Fox!!!” Is that the same Sonny Fox as on XM Comedy now (and voicing id’s/liners on a few other channels, too)? (9/22/08) What's the old saying, "figures lie and liars' figure?" Right. Today on his show, resident WMAL neanderthal Chris Plante attempted to analyze the banking crisis by saying the regulations on investment banks were loosened by a 1999 law authored by McCain pal Phil "a nation of whiners" Gramm but that Democrats must share the blame since "WILLIAM JEFFERSON BLYTHE CLINTON SIGNED IT INTO LAW." Well, wrong. It was a Republican measure backed by Republicans and only signed by Clinton because it was A VETO-PROOF MEASURE. I tried to call Plante's show to correct him but he didn't take my call so decided to post it to a wider audience here. (Note to Dave: Did you ever think ammending the Glass-Steagall act would make it into the mailbag?) ACH (9/22/08) Dave's response: Ha ha ha! Hey, I miss Chris Core even more on 630..... Commander Bunny....NOT funny. Murph is one of my best friends. Your "bunny humor" is hare raising. PLB (9/22/08) Another drama is starting to be played out on WTEM. Genghis "Stay off my lawn, you kids" Cohen, waiting for the old Zenith Commander to warm up in time for Matlock in sunny Prince William County... Of course, I also had an unrequited crush on Sally Starr from Philly; it was the cowboy boots and fringe, I tells ya…. (9/22/08) What happened to Denise Dory, co-anchor on ABC2 GMM? (9/22/08) Now that WMAL has won the “station of the year” award from the NAB is it finally OK to agree that these awards are complete BS? The awards are meaningless, and the criteria they use to judge the stations is laughable. I have won three Marconi’s and I can’t even tell you where they are today. Most companies could care less about the awards with the exception of Bonneville and ABC/Citadel. (9/22/08) Dave's response: Industry insiders voting on industry insiders. The public simply doesn't care. Hell, I didn't even remember that the Emmys were on last night. Although, it seems that they brought Lisa de Moraes to orgasm, as usual..... Yesterday, Donovan McNabb set a new Eagles franchise record with his 176th career touchdown pass. A franchise that has existed since the early 1930s. Quite a journeyman. (9/22/08) I had forgotten all about Kinevideo.net !!! Several years ago I bought some tapes from them of the old Wonderama show, one featured ABBA in their first American TV appearance ( Doing Momma Mia ) even though for years Dick Clark always had made the claim that ABBA's first American TV appearance was on American Bandstand and that Wondrama was strictly a local NYC show so therefor AB was ABBA's first nationwide appearance. Even today its very funny how so many people think of Bob McAllister and Wonderama they consider that show strictly WNEW-TV !! As in Wonderama only aired on NYC's WNEW channel 5 and nowhere else. Of course that is not true, not only did Wondrama aired on WTTG but I believe Bob McAllister himself had made so many local appearances in this region that Wonderama could have easily been passed off at being a "local" WTTG show as well besides was there THAT much of difference back then between WNEW and WTTG other than one was in DC and the other in NYC? I know Wonderama aired in LA on KTTV plus Kansas City, The Twin Cities and Cincinatti ( well Metromedia had stations ) and I think Wonderama also aired in one or two smaller markets as well. While Wonderama may have been on far fewer stations than American Bandstand, still I would consider Wonderama a "nationwide" show. (9/22/08) Bohanon in a beard? Personally, I can't get enough of Pat Murphy in a Superman costume from WMOD in the early 70's! Man, that says it all! I'm told that PLB gets a chubby just looking at it! Commander Bunny (9/22/08) Dave's response: Hey, no gay cracks about PLB! He's as straight as they come. Not that there's anything wrong with that..... I've been "fuzz-faced" non-stop since the summer of 1979..... I haven't heard erockster because I don't have HD radio. It's too bad that DC101 doesn't just put some of that programming on its regular signal. The idea sounds good, from what I've heard of it from Dave on this website. As for HD, there is so much criticism that I probably won't spend the money on it. The problem I see with radio, in general, is that people do have great programming ideas; however, they don't end up on stations that most people actually listen to on a regular basis. It ends up on HD or satellite. Why doesn't terrestrial radio get a clue and get bold with its programming? Bruce Simon's KineVideo.Net is a one-man operation in LaLa land which sells such clip reels and countless vintage kinescopes on DVD. For instance, that 1972 WBAL-TV news open of Rolf, Rhea & JP is contained on a two-hour disc titled "Rare Baltimore TV Programming, Vol. 1" which also features an endless parade of Natty Bo spots and other Charm City produced commercials, '50s weather forecasts by Al Herndon and Richard Dix, and plenty of '60s reporters' bloopers. First clip on that DVD is from August 1966 with Royal Parker delivering the news... then cutting to a commercial where he lusts for Mash's Ham. (The RTCA's first "Tapes of Wrath" is also thrown-in for no known reason.) Check-out Bruce's site for details on at least three other discs with Baltimore content. His September sale has DVDs going as cheaply as $8. (9/21/08) Maybe our new News Director at WUSA won't be that bad and truly understands what needs to be done. This is what he wrote on his Facebook page: "I am off to my new job VP of the Information Center or in the old days News Director. To answer the biggest question on peoples mind; WHY? Sometime you just need to stop talking about what needs to be done and DO IT!" Does this signal major changes at WUSA? I would say so! I expect the entire infrastructure from GM to PA to change at WUSA. First to go: difficult photographers and "Buckles" the catty cat. (9/21/08) In reguards to that Rolf Hertsgaard/Rhea Fiken WBAL-TV clip that is on You Tube, about five years ago even before the clip appeared on You Tube, the same clip appeared for awhile on Winchester's now defunct media website Btvonlinemedia.com. The clip was still there when I took over that site for a brief time and two things I remember. One of the Hertsgaard's kids emailed us saying they had never seen their father anchoring the news since they were a bit young when he appeared on WBAL-TV that is until the clip appeared on Btvonline. Second was there the two webmasters Tanner Miller ( WLTF & WICL ) and Kim Leach actually got that clip in the first place. They got it from an employee at channel 11 alright but it was not WBAL. Rather it was KKTV ichannel 11 in Colorado Springs. Chris Hoff (9/21/08) /\ September 21 Messages /\ ![]() \/ September 20 Messages \/ Donovan McNabb is a journeyman, because, well one guy who is a couple of chromosomes short of an eggplant says so, and nothing more. A previous poster, already compiled a list of his accomplishments, which were summarily ignored. Again, all McNabb has done is prove the comedian Limbaugh wrong, year after year. Now Doug Williams has been brought up as a red herring, because he is black and because he won a Superbowl. Now we know, many average, yes, maybe even journeyman quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl, while many Quarterbacks who are considered great never have. So what ? It's a team game, yet Quarterback is without question probably the most difficult of all positions. McNabb has fended off challenges and returned year after year to be the Eagles starting quarterback. Does that make him great ? Maybe not, but a journeyman ? Hardly. Go to NFL.com and compare McNabb to Doug Williams, you may be surprised at the shocking difference in overall statistics, QB rating, TDs to Ints, etc. It isn't even close. Now go and compare McNabb to all the other Quarterbacks who have graced the fields of the NFL since he started playing for the Eagles. *Hint*--start at the bottom of the list to identify the journeymen, not at the top. Currently, McNabb is ranked second by the NFL for all quarterbacks in the league. Sadly, arguing with a dittohead is like trying to trim the fat from bacon. I wouldn't even bother if it were shades of gray, but this guy with his 3" pecker at full attention defending Rush at all costs is pathetic. (9/20/08) I've seen that WBAL-TV clip on YouTube too and it brought back lots of memories. I interned there in 1973 and was often in the studio for the news broadcasts. We weren't allowed to do much more back then. Ray White was news director. I believe Jim English did the vo. We addressed everyone as "Mr." or "Miss" back then, except for Larry Schultz, Jim Mustard and A.W. Geiselman, who all insisted we call them by their first names. Rolf was serious and aloof, and I don't think he enjoyed the Rhea & J.P. (Cal Shumann) bit at all. Years later, when I got to work with him again at WITH, I found him to be knowledgable, engaging, and in possession of a quick (and somewhat dark) sense of humor. Jo Burkee was a serious newswoman married to a man who lived on the west coast. Ron Canada was a brooder who didn't say much. Geiselman, Schultz and Paul Lockwood were very down to earth as was Jim Mustard, who remained a friend for years. But Neal Friedman was just plain unfriendly. I have slides somewhere around the house taken in the newsroom and the studio. Maybe I'll dig them up one day. Personally, I preferred sneaking out of the newsroom and onto the "Duckpins & Dollars" set to escape the boredom. One last item, my second grandson Cameron was born yesterday at GBMC. That puts me one ahead of Ken Merson. Gary Helton, WHFC-FM (9/20/08) Dave, I purchased an HD radio for my truck, it was an add on that feeds into your existing radio. Both the manufacturer and retailer are popular names. Within 24 hours of driving around the DC area, I have both called the manufacturer and the retailer to let them know what a piece of junk the product is, and in general ,HD radio is. Stations were dropping out left and right. The signal both sounded cleaner and I had much better coverage on the regular analog channels. I am sticking with XM (now Sirius XM) and I am not wasting another dime on HD radio until someone proves to me the coverage has inproved. I am considered to live relatively close in, A hop skip and a jump form the beltway, within 10 miles of many of the stations offering HD (their towers, not studios, and it still dropped out). I was on a panel reviewing mobile internet radio in cars and I can tell you that product is better than this one. Don't waste your money on HD. It still has a long way to go! Tom R. in Fairfax (9/20/08) Dave's response: I have a home model HD Radio and, yeah, there's not much to listen to on it. I love DC101's erockster. And would love listening to 98 Rock's indie channel - if I could get the Baltimore rocker's digital signal here in Northern Virginia..... Dave, you have all the right in the world to criticize Rush, but I never see you going after the liberal blow hards like Chris Mathews, John Mclaughlin, Andrea Mitchell, Howard Stern, Keith Olbermann, and some of the other liberals who preach junk on the airways. Rush is a major mouth, but so are the others I have mentioned. If you are going to criticize Rush which is your right, go both ways. Scott in Va (9/20/08) Dave's response: I frequently "go after" Chris Matthews and have criticized Howard Stern many times. I have pontificated that Stern's deal with Sirius significantly reduced his influence as a pop culture figure while padding his bank account. Yeah, I do agree that John McLaughlin is a blowhard, but I'm pretty sure he's not a liberal..... I always believed WUSA’s Assistant News Director held / received her job out of legacy and tribute to her father. As for the new News Director, he has been with Gannett corporate for over five years and most definitely had a hand in who was hired and fired at Channel 9 during that time period. He personally had a hand bringing Tracey Neale and Todd McDermott to the station, placing Leslie Foster on the 6PM and 11PM, taking Foster off the 11PM and the hiring of Anita Brickman. How do I know this? Easy! The corporate culture at Gannett is a team approach, no one manager has the simple say of “I am going to do this” or “I am going to do that.” They all pool together in teams and make group decisions. This way, no one really has to take responsibility for bad decision making. Have any of these changes helped? Nope. If anything, they continue to tank. As a parting shot, Channel 7 should take the “Eyewitness News” slogan just like they use at the ABC affiliates in New York City and Los Angeles. (9/20/08) I have to agree with the earlier poster about giving credit to whoever the programmer is for The Bay by them getting back to you regarding your sent e mail expressing your displeasure with the Bob & Tom show. It was nice of them to get back to you. However I do think it was a terrible decision also. Baltimore is a city that likes to talk about local issues first then national or global issues second. Throw in some great tunes with local comical jocks and you've got a pretty good morning show. The Bay has several good jock's that are from Baltimore including Klug & AJ who's on the weekends. I wonder why they didn't just team those guys up together? It would be something new and fresh that Baltimore needs instead of other jocks that have been together on different channels. New local change is always a good thing people.. it's been proven that it strikes up interest. (9/20/08) I was looking at old Baltimore TV news clips on You Tube this week and found a classic WBAL TV Channel 11 clip which was the best of them all. This clip, which should actually be in the Broadcast Hall of Fame, the Museum of Television & Radio in New York, or shown at the Newseum in Washington, serves as an example of just how much newcasts, attitudes, styles and broadcast culture has changed. The clip features legendary WBAL-TV Anchor Rolf Hertsgaard broadcasting a 7:00 PM newscast for Channel 11 and veteran broadcaster Rhea Fiken (now MPT 30 plus yrs) anchoring weather with a puppet named JP. Besides the idea of doing weather with a puppet, which definitely stands out as something special about the 60-70's era of local TV news, what also catches my attention looking at this today-- is how advanced WBAL TV news was with their opening graphics presentation and their TV style. The show opening starts with an "animated style" globe turning, which was of course not animated, but done well, and then a color graphic effect of their logo and the words "TV 11 News," which was done so well that it almost looks like something way ahead of its time. Not to mention the circular motorized set wall that moves, opens and reveals a circle panel styled anchor presentation. In this clip, Rolf Hertsgaard is obviously not working with a prompter, but doesn't miss a beat and is very much the professional journalist I remember him to be from those early years watching TV news with my dad during my childhood. Some of the names mentioned during the opening VO sound like people who seem to still be around working today. Names like Tom Davis, Joe Brickee and Ron Canada(MPT/DC,s CH-7), who I recognize today as a successful TV/movie character actor in Hollywood. Also mentioned are the late Jim Mustard and Neil Friedman. Is this the same Neil Friedman who served as Health Commissioner? And is the Tom Davis mentioned the same Tom Davis who does radio and TV sports today? Does anyone know anything about the motorized set? Also, who is the VO announcer featured. It seems pre Royal Parker who served as WBAL-TV station announcer for many years until his retirement. While there are parts of this presentation that I don't really remember-- and some that I do, I do know it was great TV like this that sparked my interest in broadcasting and directed me to a career that I love still today. Take a look. www.youtube.com (9/20/08) Ric Edelrmen is being simulcast on WMAL and C-SPAN TV, and also on the C-SPAN 90.1 FM HD 2. Isn’t this a violation of the keep HD radio uninspiring protocol agreement in simulcasting commercial broadcasts? Btw. Limbaugh has been unlistenable ever since he stopped using music with those homeless, environmentalist wacko, femi-nazi, condom, etc. updates and he was at least somewhat funny. Listening to Limbaugh for years now as been like going over to somebody house and having to listen a pompous old man sitting in is easy chair going on and on about what’s wrong with the world. His show isn’t even enlightening – he became the icon of the Republican Party the night George Bush 1 made him guest to the Lincoln bedroom. You think good talk radio in America, if this is still a place we are fortunate to have free speech, regardless of affiliation should be iconoclastic. Unfortunately, Limbaugh isn’t the only one just babbling on with iconic-dualist dribble. –David, Vienna (9/20/08) The other day in the mailbag I noticed a spelling error......"but I am pretty sure I heard Frank Luber mentioning one morning that WCBM will start airing ads ( or maybe it was a whole program ) sponsed by Exodist International, the so-called religious group who had made claims in that past where they can turn someone who is gay into straight."..actually its EXODUS International. Yes one can still sue today if someone calls them gay in public the same way the late Liberace did in the 50's even though such suits are rare today. The last such suit I can remember was back in the late 1980's down in Hampton Roads when a dj for then CHR WGH-FM made some crack on the air about a DJ at another local CHR station ( WNVZ Z104 ) was gay. I the Z104 dj sued and the case actually went to trial. I seem to recall reading on another site where not only the Z104 jock WON but the trial pretty much destroyed WGH-FM's CHR format as they would soon go country and that format still remains today. Going back to Exodus, being a religious group I believe they have "total free speech". In other words if they wanted to buy time on a local radio or even a television station and during their program Exodus wants to "out" people in an effort to "help them go straight" then they have that right to do that and those who were outed wouldn't be able to sue ( even if the person in question isn't gay to begin with ) since what Exodus is doing is considered a "religious service". (9/20/08) "Dear "where's the beef": I am a Limbaugh listener and I am a supporter/listener. I don't agree with him 100% but I do find him entertaining and, for the most part, right (no pun intended). You're right, I don't want Obama in the White House for the next 4 years. It has NOTHING to do with his skin color. It has to do with his views and that I see confiscatory taxes coming from him. I am no big McCain supporter but I think he's the lesser of 2 evils. I don't see how his college transcripts from 40+ years ago really matter now. I also think his thinking this country and the people in it are great is a GOOD thing. How dare he think that we are great people and try to instill optimism in us instead of just blaming us for all the world's problems" Well, this pretty much proves my original point. If you really don't care that John McCain was a lousy student, a below average pilot, apparently has little clue about economics, and his ominpresent jingoism is substance enough for you, you get what you deserve. If his college transcripts don't matter, then don't throw his POW experience into the mix either. Confiscatory taxes? Well, then, I guess you're in that $250,000+ a year income bracket. My household income is less than $100,000, and my family and I live a terrific lifestyle. My taxes won't be going up under Obama's tax plan. I had always considered myself upper middle class, but according to McCain's way of thinking, I'm on poverty row. By the way, pal, how do you think this country is going to pay the bill run up by the current administration? Magic beans? I can't wait for the debates. Seeing McCain obfuscate is great sport this campaign season. (9/20/08) Dave's response: If Rush voices support for those tankless water heaters during the program content of his show, could his support for Palin/McCain also be "conpensated"? A big fat "hmmm" for the FCC, especially if Obama gets elected, I would think..... Black Truitt... I think that is Blake Truitt. Used to be a WTOP Account Executive (9/20/08) Dave: First, people should take a moment, step-away and read one week's worth of the mailbag. It's not only a good read but it gives you a great picture of others' knee-jerk or immediate opinions without thinking. Anyway, Channel 9 has one of the best facilities in the country and if you're lucky enough work on Wisconsin Avenue, you should feel lucky. Unfortunately, the Gannett people keep hiring managers who have awful people and management skills... and their ill-will spreads like cancer. People like Ward and Snyder or bad people and didn't/don't deserve to work at a top 10 market station. Furthermore, the are some real pros at Channel 9 and it was a sad moment when Gordon Peterson left...but I'm sure Gordon a stronger management team could have convinced him to stay. With Gannett hiring someone from Little Rock, it's back to the drawing-board. I think most people are starting to realize local news is a rough and tough business and the good, experienced people are a thing of the past. (9/20/08) In ref to: "DCRTV Dave asked: '...Cut, fired, canned, resigned, dismissed, terminated, booted, released, bounced. They're all pretty harsh words. Got a suggestion for something nicer?' I've always liked the British phrase 'made redundant'". When I was in the Navy, when an officer or other official was sacked, canned, fired, dismissed, or otherwise relieved of duty, you were "shit canned", plain and simple. Sometimes, to be more polite, the somewhat archaic & humorous term, "cashiered" was used. You could also refer to an "involuntary resignation". -- MarkD, Arlington (9/20/08) I got this form email from the programmer at 100.7 The Bay after I sent an email expressing my dislike of their idiotic decision to go with Bob & Tom in the mornings: First, thanks so much for the time that you have spent listening to The Bay, and second, thanks for emailing and letting us know your feelings. I'm sorry to hear that you don't like Bob & Tom. The simple truth of the reason for the morning change is that while having a music-focused show has been fun, the fact is that the ratings for the morning show when we kept it music-based have consistently been much lower than the ratings for the rest of the day on The Bay. We gave the last show four years, but the ratings have not only not climbed, they've actually been going down. I really believe that if you give the show a week or two, you may find that there is a lot about it that you really enjoy. I know that won't be true for everyone, but I hope you will give it a chance. I appreciate the time that you have spent with us, and I hope that there will still be things about The Bay that you will find worthwhile. And of course, Colleen still kicks off the Classic Rock at 10am sharp, and that continues through the other 20 hours of each day. Thanks for your input. Even when you're telling us what you DON'T like, we really appreciate it and take it very seriously. I give him credit for any response, but I still think that going with a stale syndicated show from Indianapolis in Baltimore is one of the all-time dumbest moves in recent radio history. If and *when" Bob & Tom tank, maybe they should look at Shamrock (if he's still available). Baltimore will not give it up for Bob & Tom, even Howard Stern got crappy ratings in Baltimore. Elliott will also tank. Local is what it's all about. (9/20/08) /\ September 20 Messages /\ ![]() Jump to the Mailbag Archive Index..... ![]() |
